Iowa police search for link in cases of violenceThe incidents in West Des Moines, Iowa Clive, Iowa and Des Moines, Iowa early Sunday led to injuries and arrests.
Iowa police in three cities were still trying on Monday to piece together a series of incidents that occurred early Sunday and sent two men to the hospital with gunshot wounds, landed three people in jail and slightly injured two Iowa police officers.
Law enforcement agencies are working to determine whether a fight at a concert, an after-hours shooting and an aggravated burglary are related. Clive, Iowa and Des Moines, Iowa officials said a link is likely.
The conflicts drew five law enforcement agencies. First, a fight was reported between two men on the dance floor at the Val Air Ballroom after a Twista album release concert at 2 a.m. Sunday. Security workers and Iowa police officers had to push through a crowd of about 100 people before reaching the men.
"There were a lot of people around them, and the security and off-duty officers had to get through the crowd to separate them," said Lt. Jim Barrett, public information officer for the West Des Moines, Iowa Police Department. "A female was hitting a security guard with a belt. One of the officers was hit with a glass."
Iowa officers, who sprayed the men with a chemical deterrent to separate them, charged Joe Walter Thompson, 21, and Jerome Jamar Hall, 18, both of Des Moines, Iowa with disorderly conduct and simple assault. Both were released from police custody at 3:47 a.m.
The woman, Lakesha Ranell Taylor, 22, of Des Moines, was identified in the parking lot later and was allegedly in possession of two rocks of cocaine. She was charged with simple assault and drug possession. She also was later released.
At 4 a.m., two men were reportedly shot in the parking lot of P'Zazz Bar and Grill in Clive, Iowa where concert attendees had migrated for an after-hours party. Police said Gary Walter Green, Jr., 34, and Shun Pierce, 33, both of Des Moines, Iowa sustained gunshot wounds. When authorities arrived, one of the victims had driven across University Avenue and was located in the nearby Chi Chi's Mexican Restaurant parking lot. The other was in the process of being transported to a local hospital by people in the area.
Green was listed in good condition Monday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Pierce had been transferred to Iowa City, Iowa and hospital officials would not release information about his condition.
Clive, Iowa Police Chief Robert Cox said police have some ballistic evidence and leads in the incident but declined to disclose information about the weapon or suspects. He also said after-hours parties have given officers cause to visit P'Zazz since it began holding them earlier this summer. The business typically closes at 4 a.m., but by state law it may not serve alcohol after 2 a.m.
"We have some concerns because of spin-off problems with people drinking all night and going to these things," Cox said of after-hours parties."
Des Moines, Iowa police are also involved in a case reported after the West Des Moines, Iowa concert.
A man and woman said they awoke in their home in the 900 block of 24th Street to find someone standing over their bed threatening them with a revolver Sunday. No arrests have been made and a detective had not been assigned to the case on Monday.
