Camanche, Iowa to receive state SAFE awardCAMANCHE, Iowa — Thanks to the efforts of community leaders, the city will receive a state certification honoring the start of its efforts to help reduce substance abuse and violent crime.
The Camanche, Iowa SAFE Coalition, which includes representatives from 14 sectors including parents, students, schools, civic groups and law enforcement, will be honored with the certification at an awards ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Camanche Youth and Community Center, 702 13th Ave.
Representatives of the Iowa Department of Public Health will present the award.
The community set up the SAFE Coalition in late May.
“We’re trying to get things rolling,” said Guy McCausland, a parole officer who is a member of the coalition.
The coalition board has been meeting once a month.
Board member Loras Osterhaus, an after-school program director with the Camanche, Iowa School District, said the designation makes the community eligible for grants that can be used for drug prevention programs and other projects.
“It always gives you lots of points,” Osterhaus said, noting that the grant guidelines strongly encourage cooperation between groups in the community.
McCausland said the coalition is developing strategies to deal with what it considers a major concern of the community — helping youths at risk of developing substance abuse problems or for violence.
“Those are the ones that we really need to target,” he said.
“The one big issue is alcohol usage among students in Camanche,” said Clinton County, Iowa Sheriff Rick Lincoln, who also is a member of the coalition.
The coalition members hope to present strategic plans for the community to help deal with these issues by the first of next year, Osterhaus said.
